That meeting was downtown at the Children’s Wing of Via Christi hospital, that meeting forever changed my outlook on life and how truly fortunate I am. We were given a tour that day and shown what the money raised by the event can go to and how it helps families that could not pay otherwise. I remember distinctly walking behind everyone slowly taking everything in, looking at the pictures on the wall and reading the stories of kids that had lost battles with birth defects, cancer, and many other diseases. I was literally lost for words, I could say nothing. Through all the sadness there was still moments of hope and happiness. As I walked by one room there was a little girl hooked up to more tubes and hoses than I could count but she still had a smile on her face. She looked up from the doll she was playing with and waved at me, the smile on her face is forever imprinted in my mind. I see that smile whenever I get stressed or feel like complaining, I think to myself if that young girl can have that big of a smile on her face facing a disease that I can’t even imagine why am I complaining about getting up early? Or having to go to class? Let’s face it we are all extremely fortunate and we all take it for granted, I know I do every day.
So when you think about registering for SHOCKERTHON don’t do it because you feel like you have to, do it because you want to. SHOCKERTHON is not about the amount of money we raise it is about bringing hundreds of college students together to support a great cause. When you see us say FTK we aren’t just saying it to say it. We truthfully mean For the Kids.
SHOCKERTHON is made possible by the donations from our generous sponsors. A special thanks to our sponsors Mel Hambelton Ford, Kansas Star® Arena, Meritrust Credit Union, Auto Masters, Credit Union of America, Cessna United Friendship Fund, Cargill® and the Learjet Employees Care Fund. Without the contributions from these sponsors, this event would not have the lasting impact that it does on the community.
