During the SHOCKERTHON event, my daughter and I came to the event to deliver donated food that I had received. My involvement of planning was limited at that point and I wasn’t really sure what SHOCKERTHON was all about. I really only planned to drop off the food.
However, when we got there I had a chance to see the atmosphere, the people, the Children’s Miracle Network families and kids and I realized I was not leaving. These children who we work so hard for, to have a day of celebration for them, to be able to see smiles on their faces, I was not going to walk out on this event.
For me, the 2 most poignant parts of the event was when some of the families spoke of their hardships, and how CMN stepped in and helped them, you could see in their eyes the gratitude and appreciation for the relief CMN has brought to their lives. The second was at the end of the night at the reveal when all in attendance stand in a circle and say the child’s name they have on their bracelet, what disease or injury they are coping with, and then cutting that bracelet to signify the event has come to an end. That bracelet is still an everyday reminder to me, and is hanging on my bulletin board in the kitchen.
There is so much more I could say, but I promised to make this short, so all I will say is this…if you or anyone you know has a tie to WSU, you have to be a part of SHOCKERTHON at least one time. Yes, $25 may seem like a lot of money, but think of it this way, it is truly just a donation to CMN, that $25 that you think is so much is just a drop in the bucket as to what we need in our community to provide the funds for CMN to continue to provide financial support to local families in need. So please don’t think of it as a lot of money for a t-shirt and some food, just come to the event once, spend that $25 once, you will never question that dollar amount again.
SHOCKERTHON is made possible by the donations from our generous sponsors. A special thanks to our sponsors Mel Hambelton Ford, Kansas Star® Arena, Meritrust Credit Union, Auto Masters, Credit Union of America, Cessna United Friendship Fund, Cargill® and the Learjet Employees Care Fund. Without the contributions from these sponsors, this event would not have the lasting impact that it does on the community.
