Don’t get me wrong, I woke up the morning after SHOCKERTHON, and my feet hurt. Do you know what I think hurt more than my feet, though? The pain we saw in the Wilson family’s eyes as they told the story of how they lost their daughter, Alyssa, just over two years ago to cancer. The pain in my feet will go away while the pain in their hearts will be there forever. We spent twelve hours on our feet, and woke up to a normal Sunday. Our Children’s Miracle Network families, on the contrary, are fighting a battle all the time. Many of them are thankful each day just to have another day.
That, is why we dance. That is what makes sacrificing those twelve hours so worth it. Developing an understanding of what it is we are dancing for, and truly being for the kids, is why we dance. We dance for treatments, for a cure, for a better tomorrow. We dance because no family should have to fight their fight alone. We dance for a day to give hope for a lifetime. We dance for every child. For Ryan White in 1991, Alyssa Wilson in 2012, and every child before, after, and in between, we dance. We dance to give those kids and their families a chance to forget about their battles and just have fun for a while.
With that, I would like to say thank you to everyone who attended SHOCKERTHON this year, and a special thank you to those who stuck it out for the entire twelve hours. This event would not have been successful without our participants, whose symbolic 12-hour stand arguably means just as much if not more than our once again record-breaking total amount raised. In the end we don’t reminisce on our feet hurting because we stood for so long or even how much money we raised. In the end we remember the kids and families whose lives we impacted. The joyful faces of the people who were given hope because we stood together, united, For The Kids.
SHOCKERTHON is made possible by the donations from our generous sponsors. A special thanks to our sponsors Mel Hambelton Ford, Kansas Star® Arena, Meritrust Credit Union, Auto Masters, Credit Union of America, Cessna United Friendship Fund, Cargill® and the Learjet Employees Care Fund. Without the contributions from these sponsors, this event would not have the lasting impact that it does on the community.
